Slattery v. Mar Pizza, et al.
Automobile accident on April 6, 2021, at 8:45 p.m. on Imperial Highway in the City of Lynwood, Los Angeles County. Defendant Maria De Los Angeles-Sanchez was working for defendant Mar Pizza, Inc. During her evening pizza delivery, plaintiff Eric Slattery, Deputy of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was involved in a motor vehicle accident with defendant. Plaintiff claimed that defendant made an illegal U-turn and entered the roadway failing to observe an officer who was responding to an emergency call with lights and sirens. The lead investigating officer at the scene placed defendant 100% at fault for the collision. However, defendants obtained the event data recorder/black box data from Sheriff’s vehicle showing that plaintiff was traveling at an excessive speed. It was further shown that plaintiff was reprimanded for violating policy by speeding while he was not authorized to use a Code 3 emergency response.
Trial was bifurcated. The jury rendered a defense verdict in favor of defendant in the first phase of trial. Plaintiff’s earlier 998 offer was for $4,000,000. The jury was told by plaintiff he would be seeking in excess of $10,000,000 at the end of the case.
